Radioactive Iodine I-131 Treatment for Carcinoma of Thyroid Patients

Until June of the 2007, treatment had been administered to only 10 patients per month, i.e. 5patients per every fortnight. But subsequent to the renovation of the Iodine Ward, 6 patients receive treatment per week.
i.e. 24 patients per month.

The refurbished Iodine ward has 6 separate rooms where 6 patients could be placed insulation. These rooms are with attach bathrooms and toilets to confine the patients to the room during treatment. These rooms are also provided with a satellite TV facility to keep the patients occupied during confinement. The movements of the patients are monitored by nursing staff utilizing a CCTV monitor.

All necessary precautions have been adopted to prevent the staff and patients and the general public form being exposed to radiation. There are two delay tanks are located away form this area to collect and neutralize the urine and excreta of patients of the iodine ward.

All these radiation protection equipment and monitoring has been by the guidance of the Atomic Authority of Sri Lanka. Our Country is a member of the IAEA (The International Atomic Energy Agency)

5000 patients receive Teletherapy on outdoor and inward basis

3 Theratron 780c Units and 1 Theratron 780e unit function on extended hours to accommodate above patients

Future installation, Dual energy Varian linear Accelerator (in latter part of 2007)
